DIGITAL CIRCLEVISION 360

CIRCLEVISION 360: Theaters that completely surrounded the audience with movie screens were extremely popular attractions at theme parks, world fairs and expositions over the last forty years. Disney’s Circlevision360 format set the standard for multi-screen, surround cinema back in the1960's with ‘America the Beautiful’. This original ground breaking film played for twenty years at the Epcot Center in Disney World, Florida. CircleVision 360 came to Expo 86 in Vancouver, British Columbia with the film ‘Portraits of Canada’ presented in the Telecom Canada pavilion and shot by MediaMind Director- Bob Ennis.

Disney Circlevision360 films were shot on 35mm film with nine cameras mounted pointing straight up into mirrors angled at 45 degrees. In this configuration they capture an entire 360 degree field of view. When projected in the theatre the visual field is recreated in all directions with just an inch gap between the nine screens.

NEW DIGITAL CIRCLEVISION 360: High Definition digital technology now enables edge blended images to be projected onto a seamless curved screen. This combined with eight channel surround sound 7.1 has rekindled interest in this immersive theatre experience. Technological breakthroughs in large venue DLP projectors and digital acquisition not only enhance the format but also substantially reduce production and theatre costs by more than 60%. Lower costs are opening up new markets in a variety of applications including destination theatres, nightclub dance floors and presentation venues.

Current theatre playback systems support eight channel 24bit 48kh audio synced with multiple streams of genlocked high definition video. Development of a computer generated 3D animated visualization engine which reacts in sync with music is planned.
